ICC Cricket World cup is in its full flow and one of the most tempting matches was to be played between England and Australia at the historic Lord’s Cricket ground. As things stood before the match, Australia was enjoying 2nd position in the points table with 10 points in their bag while three lions were holding the 4th spot with 8 points.

The pitch had moisture in it and had some grass due to which it was assumed that it won’t be a walk in the park for whoever bats first. England won the toss and decided to field first. Old timers Warner and Finch opened the innings and despite a difficult seaming pitch, didn’t give any joyful moment to the English pacers and went past 100 completing their half centuries comfortably. England got their first breakthrough via Moeen Ali in the 23rd over when Warner fell after the opening partnership of 123 runs. Usman Khwaja came out in the middle and joined 50 runs in the partnership before a brilliant yorker from Ben Stokes bowled him out. Smith came next meanwhile on the other end skipper Finch completed his 2nd century of the World Cup 2019. Right after his 100, Finch was caught by Woakes and England bounced back in the game. Maxwell was the next one who only contributed a dozen runs and returned. After this loss Australians started panicking which was evident from Stoinis’ run out and a miscued shot from Smith which dismissed him. Carey was the last ray of hope, who stayed unbeaten till the end guiding Australia to a fighting total of 285 after they failed to capitalize on a strong foundation laid by their openers.

English openers came out to inaugurate the chase but Vince was bowled in the first over giving Australians the perfect start. Starc doubled England’s trouble when he dismissed the in- form Joe Root. England problems continued to grow when they lost their skipper Morgan and England went 3 down on 26 runs. Bairstow also departed shortly leaving Stokes and Buttler at the helm. The pair then proceeded with calmness building a strong partnership of 70 runs. England looked in control and decided to accelerate and that’s when they lost Buttler. Woakes accompanied Stokes as the latter completed his 50, but Starc dismissed Stokes with a peach of a delivery right in the block hole thrashing his stumps. Moeen Ali and the rest of the lineup couldn’t contribute anything substantial and England was all out for 221 in the 45th over. Jason Behrendorff picked 5 wickets while Starc managed to dismiss 4 helping Australia in their 64 run victory.
Australian skipper Aaron Finch was chosen Man of the Match for his brilliant ton. This crucial win confirmed Australia as the first semi finalist of World Cup 2019 as they move at the top with 12 points. England remains on 4th position and find themselves in deep waters as their loss keep all the teams below them alive in the contention for a semi final spot.
