Another day and another cricketing day at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, this time a mid-table clash in the Riverside Cricket Ground between, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Sri Lanka had nothing much to lose going into this game and nothing much was left to gain after this match as Sri Lanka were out of contention of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The West Indies situation was no different and they were also out of the race from this World Cup and were playing for their honour. West Indies were at the 9th position with 3 points while Sri Lanka was slightly above them at the 7th spot.

West Indies won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first. Kusal Perera came out alongside Karunaratne to open the innings for the Lankans. The due instigated things positively and blunted the West Indian attack right from starting. 93 runs were contributed by the 1st wicket when Karunaratne was caught behind. Promising Avishna Fernando walked out next and replicated his accomplice well but soon Kusal was also run out after a very good 64. Avishka and Kusal Mendis then held the helm and provided much needed stability for the Lankans taking Sri Lanka past 150. Mendis was cleaned up by Allen who took a sensational catch. Mathews came in next and helped his team to reach 250 as he was bowled in the 39th over. Thirimanne scored a quick knock as Avinsha completed his maiden ODI hundred and Sri Lanka were able to put a huge total of 338 on the board.

West Indies had a huge task to complete in order to grab a win when Gayle and Ambris strolled in to begin the chase and their problems just soared when Lasith Malinga drew first blood for the Lankans picking up Ambris. To add more trouble he picked up Shai Hope as well in his next over leaving the West Indies struggling on 22-2. Hetmyer provided some firmness but Gayle and Hetmyer both fell in quick succession and the Sri Lankans took the driving seat. Jason Holder with Pooran added some runs but he also couldn’t offer much as he was caught. Brathwaite also failed to make big impact but Allen and Pooran then freed their arms and hammered every loose ball coming their way. Allen completed his 50 in just 30 balls while Pooran reached his century in 92 deliveries. The pair looked determined to snatch away an incredible victory but Allen was run out. West Indies needed 31 runs in 3 overs and Veteran Mathews as asked to bowl who last bowled in December 2017, but with a magnificent delivery he pulled the plug out of West Indies comeback as he dismissed the centurion. It was all over for the West Indies from there as they managed 315 falling short of 23 runs.

Man of the Match award was given to Avishna for his wonderful century. Srilanka moved up to 6th while West Indies remained on 9th position.
